Stretch Marks Remedies and Removal

Stretch marks are lines on the skin that start off as raised red lines. They then turn purple, before slowly fading into flat silvery streaks. The medical name for this type of mark is stria. Stretch marks happen when the skin is stretched a lot over a short period of time, such as during pregnancy.

Stretch marks can also occur from prolonged use of oral or topical corticosteroids. They are also a feature of the disease Cushing’s syndrome, where increased adrenal cortical activity i.e. excessive circulating cortisol is implicated in their development. However, different people are affected by stretch marks differently and the severity and development of lesions appear to depend greatly on individual factors. Once again, this suggests a genetic component.

Stretch marks occur in the dermis, the elastic middle layer of skin that allows it to retain its shape. However, when constantly stretched, the dermis can break down leaving behind stretch marks. Stretch marks often appear on the breast and abdomen during pregnancy. The reason is partly hormonal. During pregnancy, hormones have the job of softening the collagen ligaments of the pelvis, so that the tissues can stretch easily during childbirth. Unfortunately, the skin collagen softens as well, allowing stretch marks to form easily.

The true cause of stretch marks is hormones. That’s right, hormonal influences are the cause. How can I support this fact? Well, when people gain weight, our hormones are produced and metabolized by fat cells. Hormones resemble fat and cholesterol, so when we gain and lose weight it affects the hormones in our body, and also the hormones in our skin.

At first, stretch marks may show up as reddish or purplish lines that may appear indented and have a different texture from the surrounding skin. Fortunately, stretch marks often turn lighter and almost disappear over time. But the fact that stretch marks usually fade and become less noticeable over time can be little consolation if you plan to spend most of your summer in a bathing suit.

So pregnant women are the most obvious candidates for stretch marks, but the next groups at risk are teenagers undergoing growth spurts during adolescence and women who have put on a lot of weight rapidly. Pregnant women start to develop marks on the abdomen during the second half of pregnancy as the skin stretches to accomodate the growing baby. However, besides the abdomen, stretch marks commonly occur on the hips, breasts and buttocks due to either gaining or losing weight in these areas.

Regardless of their causes, all stretch marks follow a natural course of progression. Active lesions are the early lesions that consist mainly of fine elastic fibers. As the stretch marks age, the fibers become thicker and there is a decrease in the thickness of the dermal layer of the skin.

Some recent research has tried to link stretch mark formation to a group of steroids called glucocorticoids. The most common glucocorticoid is cortisol. Research has proven that with elevated levels of cortisol in your body, your body tends to gain weight. This is because when your body senses that it is under stress, it releases more cortisol. Things that can cause your body to stress include not only your normal every day work and life stresses, but also pregnancy, adolescent growth spurts, and weightlifting. Improper nutrition, excessive caffeine intake and smoking are additional causes of body stress.

Creams containing vitamin E are often recommended, and in the Caribbean cocoa butter is used to remove scars with varying levels of success. Creams are available from the pharmacist or health and beauty shops.

Cosmetic surgery to remove stretch marks is available. However, this can be uncomfortable and is usually expensive. There’s no guarantee that it will solve the problem either.

Steroid Hormones and Stretch Marks: the Connection Between Them

Stretch marks is usually defined as the scarring when the dermis tears just underneath the skin due to rapid skin expansion or growth.  The area where the tearing occurs redden over time then takes on a color that is silvery to the naked eye.  It is these silvery areas that we know commonly as stretch marks. How is this connected to steroids? Since stretch marks occur when there is rapid growth or stretching of the skin, this can lead to the assumption that steroid hormones and stretch marks actually do have a connection.  This is because steroids stunt ordinary growth which is something that our skin is not ready for naturally.Stretch Marks & AthletesMuscle Building – In order to vastly boost athletic performance, some people work out so that it will build their muscles faster and make them more efficient.  Most athletes have stretch marks because of this heightened physical activity.  It is simply because their dermis is not ready or strong enough to hold together from all the muscle growth and therefore the tearing begins and the stretch marks start to form.  This is a common occurrence mostly in bodybuilders.  Stretch marks that do occur usually are found where the greatest muscle mass has formed in a short period of time. How Does This Happen? The Glucocoricoids – There are many different theories today that are being tested so that people understand stretch marks even more.  One of these theories suggests that they are a result of what are known as glucocorticoids.  When these substances are richly present in the bloodstream, they are assumed to cause stretch marks more than anything else. Now, what are glucocorticoids?  The interesting part is that these substances are a class of steroid hormones that are produced by the body.  We can actually cause the substance to be released when we are in a state of physical or mental stress by producing cortisol which is a group of hormones glucocorticoids belongs to. Bodybuilders do go through a lot of physical and mental stress and this is how we connect the steroid hormones and stretch marks formation. The Connection – When this hormone is released, the body is sent signals and the body will react in many different ways to the stress that released the hormones.  This leads us to eat more so that we can balance the glucose that we feel is lost when we are stressed.  If this stressed state is prolonged, then there is a greater tendency for the body to burn excess fat a lot slower.  We therefore gain weight a lot quicker than normal and this can produce numerous stretch marks around the body where skin is stretched. It is essential to get to the root causes stretch marks so that we might be able to counter the effects or prevent the marks from occurring.  But other people who are more wary of their skin can take more natural methods in making sure that they do not produce stretch marks.  This involves a good diet and just the right amount of time of exercise.

How to Get rid of Stretch Marks – Remove Marks Completely

Skin does not bounce back if it has been stretched by rapid growth due to pregnancy, weight gain, or extreme weight loss. Instead, it becomes decorated by a form of scarring called stretch marks, or striae. Stretch marks often start off as reddish or purplish in color and then become glossy skin that appears streaked in silver or white
Depending on the severity and location of the scar tissue, exfoliation may be helpful. Removing layers of dead skin and unveiling soft, fresh skin can help minimize the appearance of stretch marks. You can use oatmeal or baking soda to make your own preparations, or choose from the many scented, specially prepared formulas available. Be sure to apply plenty of moisturizer to keep the skin soft and hydrated after exfoliation.
Alpha Hydroxy Acid is probably the most popular treatment to get rid of stretch marks on the market today. AHAs are found in just about every major brand of skin cream and stretch mark treatment in the cosmetics section of your local department store. These acids, derived generally from sugar cane or dairy products, are potent exfoliating compounds. When AHAs are applied to the skin, they break down the proteins that hold dead skin cells together, essentially dissolving the dead skin, allowing newer, younger skin to take its place skin with a pigment closer to your natural tone.
Laser therapy is one of the best options to remove stretch marks. Different types of lasers will be used depending on the color of the stretch marks. One type of laser reduces the color of dark stretch marks while another stimulates the production of pigment-making cells in already faded stretch marks. A newer type of laser therapy can be used to stimulate the production of collagen and help restore the skin elasticity in depressed stretch marks.
Cocoa Butter-Remember that no lotion or cream can prevent or erase stretch marks because they form in layers of skin too deep for any moisturizer to reach. If your pregnant belly is tight and itchy, you can keep it more comfortable by applying a rich moisturizer frequently. Cocoa butter is widely recommended. Shea butter and jojoba oil are not as easy to find, but these also have many properties that can ease dry skin.
Massaging on the stretch marks serves as an excellent home remedy for stretch marks removal. You can either use olive oil, flaxseed oil, vitamin E oil or cod liver oil for the purpose of massage
For preventing and smoothing out stretch marks you can benefit from Grapefruit Seed Extract. It works to get rid of stretch marks by restoring the damaged collagen and elastin in the skin. By using Grapefruit Seed Extract you will see your stretch marks becoming restructured into fresh skin.
Grapefruit Seed Extract is especially beneficial to rub on your body during and right after pregnancy. This will help to prevent stretch marks and return your skin back to its before-pregnancy shape and size quickly after the birth.

Remove Stretch Marks With These Medicinal Herbs

Stretch marks are scars that are produced on the skin mostly due to pregnancy and childbirth. These are present as lighter lines of the skin, with a whitish hue. Though stretch marks are usually associated with pregnancy and childbirth, it is not actually true. Stretch marks can also occur due to obesity, excessive physical labor involving a particular part of the skin, bodybuilding, pubertal changes, dieting, etc. Stretch marks are called as striae distensae medically. However bad they may appear, stretch marks are always a cosmetic problem and they have no repercussions on the health of the person.

A significant part of the joy of childbirth is marred when the woman finds out that the pregnancy has brought on several disagreeable changes in the body. Stretch marks are among the topmost of pregnancy-related problems. These put a big dampener on the self-confidence of women. In fact, some women may decide not to give birth to a child just to avoid the disfiguring changing that pregnancy brings on.

But there is actually no need to despair. Through Ayurveda, Indian doctors have discovered and perfected several techniques by which women can treat their stretch marks of pregnancy; and also avoid them while they are pregnant. Useful Herbs for the Treatment of Stretch Marks

# Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)

The holy basil, or the tulsi, is used in the prevention of bleeding of tissue, stretch marks and scarring that can occur during pregnancy.

# Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica)

The gotu kola is an indigenous Indian herb which is now being extensively marketed and used in foreign countries for healing stretch marks and other cosmetic problems of the skin. It is an important ingredient in several pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of stretch marks.

# Indian Madder (Rubia cordifolia)

Indian madder is popular as the manjishtha in Ayurvedic language. It is very effective in the solution of skin problems such as stretch marks. It also prevents skin ulcers.

# Indian Margosa (Azadirachtha indica)

The Indian margosa is none other than the neem, which is almost worshipped in Ayurvedic medicine. This is used to prevent itches and abscesses that can be caused during pregnancy. It takes care of stretch marks. The neem is also useful in the treatment of secondary infections.

# Sandalwood (Chandana)

Sandalwood has a cooling effect on the skin. It protects the skin from stretching extensively during pregnancy. Dietary Treatments for Treatment of Stretch Marks

During pregnancy, women must take care of their skin. For this, their diet must contain sufficient amount of vitamin E. Vitamin E is present in several oils such as olive oil, sunflower oil, wheat germ oil, walnut oil and peanut oil and in foods such as carrots, tomatoes, hazelnut, soybeans, pollards, corn, asparagus and oatmeal. In fact, oatmeal is traditionally prescribed to women to get rid of their stretch marks.

The diet should also contain good amounts of vitamin C, which is essential in maintaining the water content of the body. This can be obtained from fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables, which must be taken in a minimum cooked form.

Sour and pungent foods must be avoided. Similarly, saturated fats must be avoided in excess, because they can cause excessive stretching of the skin, and also lead to obesity. Eating seeds and nuts that are rich in mineral content, especially zinc is good for toning up the skin during pregnancy.

The water content of the skin must be kept high in order to maintain its suppleness. When pregnant, the woman must drink at least six to eight glasses of water in a day.Home Remedies for the Treatment of Stretch Marks

# Apply a cream that is rich in content on the region where stretch marks are prone to occur. This will prevent the stretch marks from appearing later on. Even if the stretch marks persist later, you can apply vitamin E containing creams on the area for removing them.

# Cocoa butter is highly acclaimed for preventing pregnancy stretch marks. This butter must be applied on the skin every night when you are pregnant. Cocoa butter has much more benefits if it is applied directly after a warm shower because it opens up the pores of the skin and helps it to permeate better.

# You can use vitamin E rich oil such as olive oil or castor oil and rub it onto the belly every night. Use some aromatic herbs like mint, lemon grass, lavender, thyme, etc., make a paste of them with the oil and apply them onto the belly for better effects. The massage must be done for about twenty minutes every night while retiring to bed. Even if this is done after the birth, it helps the stretch marks to subside after a few weeks.

Stretch Marks Information You Need to Know

More than likely you have heard about stretch marks, and there is a good chance that you actually have a few of your own. So, you may be wondering how stretch marks actually occur. Well, what happens is that when skin gets stretched out due to quick growth, it can have a hard time bouncing back to normal. Often, instead of getting back to normal, the skin actually becomes scarred by stretch marks. In the beginning the stretch marks can look an angry red or even purplish. However, later they usually become less noticeable as a light silver or white color. Stretch marks are basically scars that occur in the dermis of your skin. The dermis is the middle layer of your skin. It works to make sure your skin maintains its shape. When the dermis continues to be stretched out, it often breaks down and stretch marks are left behind. Women usually are more prone to develop stretch marks, but they occur in men as well, and in some cases they even occur to younger teens. The most common places for stretch marks to occur include the low back, the upper arms, the thighs, the breasts, hips, and of course the stomach area. Causes & Treatment of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks occur in the middle layer of the skin called as dermis. As long as there is support with the dermis, you will never see any stretch marks. When the skin is constantly stretched, the dermis breaks down leading to stretch marks.

During pregnancy, especially at the beginning of third trimester, stretch marks usually appear on the tummy. This can happen due to the rapid enlargement of the uterus, then it makes the stretching of the skin of the tummy. The skin in some parts somehow loses its elasticity, and when the baby born, the skin becomes suddenly flabby, and the stretch marks don’t seem want to go from the tummy.

A specific treatment for stretch marks that could completely remove the stretch marks and return the skin to its natural color is not available till date.

Vitamin E is available in a variety of different forms, such as alpha, beta, delta, and gamma tocopherol. The variety with the highest bioactivity for topical use on the skin surface is alpha-tocopherol. It has shown a great variety of skin benefits in clinical studies, such as reduction in scarring and the reduction of stretch marks. The effect of vitamin E on stretch marks is thanks to its regenerative effect on skin. Vitamin E penetrates deeply into the skin to stimulate the growth of new cells, replacing the scar tissue found under stretch marks.

The key to avoiding stretch marks is to use a topical skin cream during pregnancy. Revitol and Strivectin are the most commonly recommended as they contain many important skin healing ingredients including Aloe Vera and Vitamin E. Many women use these in conjunction with coco butter lotions on the areas most likely to be affected by stretch marks (the stomach, breasts, and thighs) and are often able to prevent them all together.

Stretch marks are very common for both the sexes, male and female. Stretch marks are also very common among over weight people. Stretch marks are not, in any way, harmful but they can be irritated or dry and are unattractive. Many people believe that stretch marks are incurable. Adding to some of the confusion surrounding stretch marks are the overly inflated claims of stretch mark reduction products on the market. Many of good, high quality creams and oils were created to infuse below your outer dermis and penetrate where your stretch marks are forming.

Breast Stretch Marks: What to Do About it

When women are pregnant, they start to experience growth in various parts of their body as their baby grows inside.  This includes their abdomens and their breasts.  It is therefore not a surprise that they should experience the formation of stretch marks in those areas as well.  In fact, abdomen and breast stretch marks are the most common kind in women during their puberty stage and even more so if they are pregnant. What Stretch Marks Are – Some people dismiss stretch marks thinking that they will just go away if they lose weight or even pack a few more pounds.  But the reality is that stretch marks are a form of scarring in the dermis area of the skin.  This is just beneath the surface of the skin so stretch marks cannot be easily wiped away either. How It Develops – Stretch marks usually occur when there is stunted growth followed by the stretching of skin.  The dermis usually cannot take the pressure from the growth and therefore it tears.  This tearing, of course, cannot be felt physically.  However, we can see these tears if we look closely at our skin.  They look like red or purplish areas where there has been active growth.  The most active places include the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and for women around the breasts area. Why You Don’t Want It – Although stretch marks are not an immediate medical concern, they are very unflattering.  This is especially true for women who wearing skimpy clothing or swimsuits when they are swimming at the beach or in a pool.  Stretch marks are just blemishes that are not inviting to look at.One other problem is that if a stretch mark is not treated or tended to at an early time, it can actually stay there for the rest of a person’s life.  This is the main reason that people would rather do away with stretch marks and with simple procedures, this is possible.  When it comes to breast stretch marks, women have two options.  They can get rid of the stretch marks naturally by starting a healthy exercise routine and making sure they stay religious to it.Surgical Procedures – The other way is to get plastic surgery.  Many breast augmentation techniques can be used to get rid of stretch marks around the breast area.  Laser treatment surgery can also be used but may not be very comfortable because a laser actually strips away layers of a stretch mark.  In its place is another more physical scar like a scratch that can be left to heal.  Although effective, laser treatment is not advisable for the breast area.Hydration – For women who are just starting to form stretch marks in the breast area, they can make sure that they have a rich liquid diet (8 to 10 glasses a day).  Another option is to use harmless medicated creams, such as those found in drugstores.  These creams can be massaged onto the breast on a regular basis to get rid of breast stretch marks that have just formed.  Women should also inspect the stretch mark areas to see if new ones start to appear as their breasts grow in the pregnancy stage.

How to Hide Stretch Marks Effectively

Stretch marks are scars that are left behind when skin is overstretched.  And much like scars, they are really identifiable and are not very nice to look at.  Although there are many remedies to getting rid of stretch marks, these solutions take a while to take effect and so you may want to know how to hide stretch marks for a temporary amount of time at least until your skin is back to its normal condition and unscarred.Long ClothesWhy Cover It – Covering up your stretch marks is probably the most practical thing to do.  If you are the type of person who likes to wear a tank top or shorts when you go out on a warm day but you have stretch marks that you don’t want exposed, you can opt to wear clothes with sleeves or even pants.Problem Areas – Stretch marks can occur in various parts of the body like the thighs and in your arms and these are the parts of your body that are exposed the most if you wear short clothing.  So while you are trying to eliminate those stretch marks, just wear clothes with longer sleeves or leggings.  If it’s a warm day, make sure to wear loose clothing so that air can travel through the clothes to keep you cool.CosmeticsUsing Make-Up – Another way on how to hide stretch marks is to use everyday make-up.  Women usually use foundation to hide blemishes or acne on their faces.  This same foundation can be used on different areas of your body as it gives the impression that the skin tone and color is balanced on skin.  This is an effective way to show that you dont have stretch marks and it also makes it look almost natural.Creams – There are also other powders and creams that you can use to cover up those stretch marks temporarily.  However, these substances can be washed away if you sweat and throughout the day, their effects will most definitely disappear.  So if you use make-up as a solution to hide your stretch marks, make sure to carry some around with you in case you want to apply more to your skin.Double Purpose CreamsStretch Mark Products – Products are now also made available to treat your stretch mark problems.  Some products also go beyond the need to eliminate stretch marks and have a second purpose as well.  These products can help treat and eliminate stretch marks and at the same time can be used to cover or conceal the stretch marks so that you can still comfortably lead on with your regular life. How do they work? They work by camouflaging your stretch marks to match the surrounding skin tone and color.  At the same time, they work by treating the stretch marks, taking away layer by layer of dead cells until your skin can heal itself and look normal again.Remember that how to hide stretch marks is not as important as how to get rid of them.  By all means, if you want your skin to look better, look for ways to eliminate stretch marks.  And as your treatment goes on you can choose one of a few ways to cover up those stretch marks for a temporary time until your skin heals properly.
